Shiatsu is a traditional hands-on Japanese healing therapy sharing its underlying philosophy with that of acupuncture. Within this philosophy it is understood that vital energy (known as Ki in Japanese) flows throughout the body in a series of pathways called meridians.
For various reasons the free flow of Ki can be disrupted and this causes a symptom or symptoms to arise. This state of disharmony in a person's flow of Ki can manifest itself in many ways, on the physical, mental and spiritual levels. Shiatsu affects us on all these levels as it is concerned with the individual's total health.
Each treatment is individually tailored to meet the client's needs.
After considering the individual's symptoms and general constitution the practitioner will employ various techniques in order to stimulate the free flow of Ki.
I see the spirit of Shiatsu as one of communication through touch as the practitioner applies pressure using thumbs, hands, elbows, knees and feet. This carefully applied pressure, combined with gentle stretching techniques and manipulations of the body, releases, redistributes and stimulates the flow of Ki in the body.
The quality of Ki changes, imbalances in the energy system are corrected and inner harmony restored, allowing the body`s own powerful self-healing processes to work more effectively.
As the treatment is adapted to the clients needs, it may not be appropriate or necessary to use all or any of the techniques mentioned above and sometimes simply gently holding certain areas is enough.
